The science behind it

Currently, calorie-restriction diets represent the leading drug-free procedure in minimising cellular indications of ageing.

This process begins within cells, when insulin/ IGF-1 signalling molecule has reduced activity. However it’s connection with the decreased glucose availability is yet to be discovered.

The decrease in glucose availability, limits the quantity of atp that is manufactured by cells, thereby inducing stress sensors to stimulate the mitochondria.

Retrograde ROS Signalling from the mitochondria prompts an Adaptive Response (Mitohormesis) within the nucleus, this stimulates the activation of “longevity genes” which can extend the lifespan.

This process is similar to ones generated by glucose restriction or physical exercise. As knowledge about the dynamics within the cell during calorie-restriction is attained from mice and other small organisms, scientists are still uncertain about the reactions within the human body.
